For all intents and purposes, you might think the protagonist of the beloved Devil Wears Prada franchise is Andrea “Andy” Sachs (Anne Hathaway), the kind of woman who needs lots of self-validation, doesn’t take fashion too seriously, and thinks she’s above it all. But if there’s one record the latest sequel sets out to straighten, it’s this: Miranda Priestly was never the villain.
Reader, I won’t lie: after seeing the trailer and color grading for The Devil Wears Prada 2, I had very low expectations. But against all odds, the sequel made me guffaw. Most importantly, it managed to capture the era we’re in — when the line between reporting and branding has almost disappeared. Back in 2006, a cohort of us viewed ourselves as Andy: young, ambitious women forced to do tasks beneath us (like get coffee). As I’ve gotten older, I’ve definitively become Team Miranda, and under that principle, the sequel does her a bit dirty — as they absolutely did to our girl Simone Ashley.
