Celebrating Lunar New Year: 2023

Those from Taiwan, China, Vietnam, South Korea, and several others rang in the lunar new year on January 22, 2023. The same day, we all woke up to the news of a shooting in Monterey Park, California that left five women and five men — all Asian American — dead and several others in critical condition. Our hearts go out to all those affected. On this occasion, we are also reflecting on the long, interconnected histories between several of these nations and South Asia. From how Indo-Chinese food came to be to how Asian Americans became the most discriminated against demographic in U.S. immigration policy to the rise of anti-Asian hate.
