South Asians are the fastest-growing major group in the U.S., and our stories are as vast and complex as the subcontinent itself. To mark Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re sharing just 20 of our favorite stories that highlight our history and the present we create. From a landmark case in Berkeley that changed American medical law to Hanumankind’s Coachella performance that centered the historic chenda, these stories celebrate the many ways we define what it means to be American — with roots in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan, and Burma.

In May 1979, U.S. President Jimmy Carter signed Asian Pacific American Heritage Week into law, which Congress expanded into a month-long celebration in 1992. This year, the White House honored Indian Americans in public service as part of its AAPI Month proclamation.

At The Juggernaut, our mission — to spotlight South Asian stories that go untold, are overlooked, or don’t get the nuance they deserve — isn’t limited to just one month. While the 20 stories below are some of our favorites, they’re a fraction of the work we do. We hope you dive in and keep exploring our archive, which grows every day.
