On September 12, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) released a clip that showed Officer Daniel Auderer making light of an Indian student’s death, who died on January 23, 2023, after another SPD officer hit her as she crossed the road.

Kandula, 23, died on January 23, 2023, after another SPD officer Kevin Dave struck Kandula, an Andhra Pradesh native enrolled as a graduate student at Northeastern University’s College of Engineering. She was crossing the road and had the right of way when Dave’s cruiser struck her at 74 miles per hour, and sent her flying 138 feet away from the intersection of Dexter Avenue and Thomas Street.

In the video, Auderer retorted that “50 miles an hour…isn’t out of control,” and doubts whether Kandula was thrown 40 feet. “It’s a regular person,” Auderer said in the footage as he laughed. “Just write a check, $11,000…she was 26 [sic] anyways, she had limited value.”
